The River Axe Race is an annual canoe/kayak event run by the Axe Vale Canoe Club with various entry categories and normally has around 100 entrants.
The 2011 River Axe Race was held on Sunday 13th March.
The River Axe Race took place on what was a glorious sunny spring day, entrants took to the water 5 miles south of Axminster at Whitford Bridge making their way through the twists and turns of the River Axe as it winds its way along the Axe Valley for 4 miles before entering the estuary for the final mile push to the finish at Axmouth Harbour.
The race is an excellent introduction to canoe racing, yet still provides a challenge for the more experienced paddler. This year's race again proved very popular with 125 participants racing 106 canoes and kayaks in 8 categories.
Paddlers this year ranged in age from 12 to 80+, Brian Massey the oldest participant at 87 years young is an inspiration to younger paddlers, having paddled the Axe Race for the past 21 years
